Abstract


Dental implants were one of the general options for replacing missing tooth. However, during implant placement, implant-related tooth damage can be accidentally occurred. This case report aimed to discuss the treatment of the damaged tooth adjacent dental implant. Chief complaint of patient was pain of natural tooth (#14) adjacent dental implant (#15) at function. The periodontal ligament space of the tooth was violated by the implant, which periapical radiolucency was observed through radiographic examination. Removal of dental implant and damaged tooth was recommended but pain was relieved and follow-up was stopped. Five years later, she was re-visited due to gingival pain of another natural tooth and damaged tooth was still vital and remained with the implant in oral cavity. Periapical lesion was not enlarged during 5 years. Without removal of the natural tooth and implant, maxillary posterior region was restored by additional implants in #16 and 17 area. Functional restoration was obtained without extensive surgical procedures related implant removal and bone grafting although dental implant of #15 was not functioning. Therefore, resting implant could be one of the reasonable treatment options but not the ideal.
